A Healthy Dose of Fun & Festivity to Boost IQ & EQ

Earlier in February, KiddyPi organised the Ratha Saptami special online events (Creative Writing, Coding) for kids and teens. Every year we celebrate the birthday of ‘Surya Devta’ or the Sun God on Ratha Saptami. Our events captured the essence of this traditional festival through writing and coding!

Constellations and Coding

Lunisolar calendars have been followed by many ancient civilizations, including India. Accordingly, festivals are observed as per the movements of the Sun, moon, planets and stars.

‘Surya’ or the Sun is associated with the constellation Leo. What if we could program our own constellations and share it with our friends and classmates!?

Our mentors chose Python Programming codes to build constellations using super simple codes! Participants simulated a realistic star-space background for the constellations and then programmed them.

From the start to end, the excitement was palpable at every moment! Questions from all, hallmarked the curiosity to know more. Everyone responded, ensuring a complete fun session.

Nobita, Sun Temples, Solar Energy and More…

The Creative Writing event was also full of fun. A bird’s eye view of Ratha Saptami festival, love for comic characters, Indian heritage monuments and the importance of solar energy – topics so varied were carefully threaded in to offer an exciting and wholesome experience.

Creative Writing is anything but a limitation! Grammar technicalities or limited vocabulary do not need to constrain our expression. We can still convey our ideas and feelings, once we give a free flight to our imagination. And along the way, we improve our communication by continually adding to our grammar and vocabulary toolbox.

We interspersed Coding with Creative Writing, thus helping the child use the left and right brains in tandem.

Coding & Festivals on Indian Lunisolar Calendar

India is the land of numerous festivals. We only know a few now. Our grandparents would celebrate many of them which we don’t celebrate anymore. Just like some native languages, festivals also seem to be dying.

The aim of our Scratch programming event was to raise awareness for many such fabulous festivals of India. Participants created button sprites and backdrops for them. It was a fresh, exciting coding activity.

The software code was written in a way that when months of the lunisolar calendar were selected, the festivals were brought into life on screen. Block-based Scratch Programming is a cool, easy way to learn programming basics and take the next leap forward.
